Does diet really affect our chances? Who knows for sure, but it is important to be at optimal health when trying to conceive. I personally don’t care for strict diets that eliminate many foods etc, but I do think it is important that we make sure we are eating a good amount of healthy food. Sugary and processed foods are bad for our system in general, and those foods give us very little nutrition. It is also important to make sure we are getting an adequate amount of calories. If you are concerned about how many calories you should be consuming for your height and weight, speak with a doctor or nutritionist. Try and keep a balanced diet of foods that contain vitamins, healthy fats and good sources of protein.

It has been said that removing caffeine and alcohol from your diet can improve chances of fertility. Many ask if having “some” of these things is ok, and it really is going to have to be a question of judgment on your part. Every personis different, and some have no problems conceiving while consuming large amounts of coffee or alcohol, and some do. From all I have read, it seems that a moderate amount of alcohol may only have a mild effect on fertility. Studies seem to differ on mild amounts of drinking-some saying it also slightly affects fertility and some saying it has no effect. As for caffeine, some say to cut it out completely, and some say to keep it under 300g. You will have to decide what is best for you.

A couple things that seem to help with egg white cervical mucus (ewcm) is grapefruit juice and green tea. Green tea has very little caffeine, or can be bought decaffeinated (the co2 process of decaffeination is supposedly better for you) and can be consumed throughout the cycle. Please be aware that green tea can interfere with absorption of folic acid. Check with your doctor about how much green tea is safe while ttc. Grapefruit juice should be made with only grapefruit juice as opposed to a mix of juices, and you should drink 1 cup a day from cycle day 1 through ovulation. If you couldn’t start on day 1 don’t worry, just start drinking it when you can! Of course you can also eat a grapefruit a day if you would prefer. Just a note that some have said it has delayed their ovulation!   Another thing that has helped with EWCM is Guaifinesin. This can be found in Mucinex (but it needs to be the ONLY active ingredient).

The Making Babies book had some good suggestions on diet.
